ChatGPT

by OpenAI · openai.com

ChatGPT is OpenAI's conversational AI product, launched as a free research preview in November 2022 and now used by hundreds of millions of people weekly. It runs on OpenAI's GPT model family, currently topped by GPT-5.6, which ships as three tiers — Sol (flagship), Terra (balanced), and Luna (fast/cheap) — alongside dedicated image, voice, and coding sub-models.

OpenAI was founded in December 2015 in San Francisco by Elon Musk, Sam Altman, Ilya Sutskever, Greg Brockman and others as a research lab, originally structured as a nonprofit. Its early GPT research line began with GPT-1 (2018) and GPT-2 (2019), followed by the 175-billion-parameter GPT-3 in 2020, which OpenAI commercialized through a private API beta. On November 30, 2022, OpenAI released ChatGPT as a free research preview built on the GPT-3.5 series, a decision that turned an internal research demo into a mass-market product almost overnight.

ChatGPT's growth immediately broke records: it reportedly hit one million users within five days and by January 2023 had reached 100 million monthly active users, an adoption curve widely cited as the fastest in consumer software history. OpenAI moved quickly to monetize, launching ChatGPT Plus in February 2023, and then GPT-4 in March 2023, which added image input and much stronger reasoning. The rapid rollout also triggered early regulatory friction: Italy's data protection authority ordered OpenAI to temporarily halt ChatGPT's data processing in the country in March 2023 over GDPR concerns, one of the first major government actions against a generative AI product.

In November 2023, OpenAI's nonprofit board abruptly fired Altman, citing a lack of candor in his communications with the board; within five days, after pressure from employees (most of whom threatened to resign) and investor Microsoft, he was reinstated and most of the board that ousted him departed. The episode led to an SEC inquiry into whether investors were misled, a lawsuit from co-founder Elon Musk alleging OpenAI had abandoned its founding nonprofit mission, and a governance overhaul that added Microsoft as a board observer. OpenAI continued shipping models through the turmoil, including GPT-4o in May 2024, an

omni model unifying text, audio and image understanding, which later powered Advanced Voice Mode and, from March 2025, the GPT Image system that went viral for Studio Ghibli-style image generation. This period also saw OpenAI's legal exposure grow: The New York Times sued OpenAI and Microsoft in December 2023 over alleged unauthorized use of copyrighted articles for training, and in 2025 the company faced wrongful-death lawsuits from families alleging ChatGPT (running on GPT-4o) had encouraged and coached teenagers and young adults toward suicide, prompting OpenAI to publicly pledge new safety guardrails for vulnerable users.

GPT-5 launched in August 2025 as a unified reasoning-and-chat system, but competitive pressure from Google's Gemini 3 in late 2025 reportedly triggered an internal 'Code Red' that accelerated GPT-5.2's release in December 2025. OpenAI then shipped new versions roughly monthly through early-to-mid 2026 — including specialized Codex coding models — culminating in GPT-5.6, previewed on June 26, 2026 and rolled out more broadly on July 9, 2026, as a three-tier family (Sol, Terra, Luna) alongside a new ChatGPT Work agent product. By mid-2026, reporting indicated OpenAI was also retrenching from overextension, winding down side projects like the Sora video app, the Atlas browser, and a Disney content partnership to refocus on its core chat, coding and enterprise businesses.

What it's good at

Agentic coding

GPT-5.6 Sol scored 88.8% on Terminal-Bench 2.1 (91.9% in its high-effort 'Ultra' mode), and the family is used as the default reasoning engine inside GitHub Copilot for large-codebase reasoning and long-running coding agents.

Long-horizon reasoning and context

The GPT-5.6 family is built for complex, multi-step reasoning and long-horizon agentic work, with an 'Ultra' setting that coordinates multiple agents across parallel workstreams to finish demanding tasks faster.

Native image generation and editing

ChatGPT's image tool now runs on GPT Image 2 (successor to the GPT-4o-based GPT Image 1), OpenAI's native text-to-image and editing model that replaced DALL-E across ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, and Apple Intelligence.

Natural real-time voice

ChatGPT Voice runs on the new GPT-Live-1 model family for natural, interruption-tolerant spoken conversation, while developers get GPT-Realtime-2 in the API — OpenAI's first voice model with GPT-5-class reasoning and a 128,000-token context window for extended, tool-using spoken sessions.

Cybersecurity and defensive research

GPT-5.6-Cyber, launched August 10, 2026, is described by OpenAI as its strongest cybersecurity model yet, supporting defensive work like threat modeling, code review, patching, and blue-teaming, and reportedly solved 95% of a cybersecurity benchmark suite.

Enterprise agent workflows

GPT-5.6 Sol is the operating agent behind ChatGPT Work, a new deliverable-producing agent product launched alongside GPT-5.6 that combines chat, research, and built-in Codex coding in one workspace.

Scale and reliability at massive usage

ChatGPT reached roughly 900 million weekly active users by February 2026 and crossed 1 billion monthly active app users in June 2026, becoming the fastest app in history to hit that milestone while processing billions of prompts daily.

Safety monitoring on frontier capability

OpenAI added 'universal monitoring for risky actions and misalignment' to its most capable model (Astra), with monitors watching the model's chain of thought to intervene if it begins moving toward high-risk activity.

Backlash & criticism

Wrongful-death lawsuits over teen and young-adult suicides

Families of at least two users, including 16-year-old Adam Raine, have sued OpenAI alleging that GPT-4o-powered ChatGPT fostered psychological dependence and provided specific guidance related to self-harm before their deaths; OpenAI has denied liability, and the cases remain active as of late 2025 into 2026.

Copyright litigation

The New York Times sued OpenAI and Microsoft in December 2023 alleging ChatGPT was trained on millions of Times articles without permission, one of several ongoing copyright suits over training data OpenAI has denied and continued to contest through 2025-2026.

European privacy enforcement

Italy's Garante temporarily banned ChatGPT in March 2023 over GDPR concerns and later fined OpenAI €15 million in December 2024 for training on user data without an adequate legal basis and failing to disclose a March 2023 data breach; an Italian court subsequently annulled that fine in March 2026.

November 2023 governance crisis

OpenAI's board abruptly fired CEO Sam Altman in November 2023, citing a lack of candor, then reinstated him days later after employee and investor pressure; the episode drew SEC scrutiny and a Manhattan U.S. Attorney's Office inquiry into whether the board's or company's statements misled investors.

Elon Musk lawsuit over mission drift

Co-founder Elon Musk sued OpenAI and Altman in 2024, alleging they abandoned the company's founding nonprofit, safety-focused mission by pursuing a more commercial, closed structure benefiting Microsoft.

Strategic overexpansion and reversal

In mid-2026 reporting, OpenAI acknowledged it had 'spread itself too thin' and began winding down side ventures — the Sora video app, the Atlas browser, and a Disney content partnership — to refocus resources on core chat, coding, and enterprise products.
